Recently, as I have been looking into various options for part-time work, I have begun to think seriously about becoming a military chaplain. There are ways to serve in this capacity with a reserve unit that won't take me too far away from my congregation. It also gives me an opportunity to prepare military personnel for deployments to the war zone, something I have felt a calling for. Honestly, I also miss being in the big green machine.
I covet your prayers for me as I make these decisions.
Godspeed Garrett,
There's a lot of pressure to be PC but I'm sure you'd thrive. You'd be welcome and effective with your past experience and current doctrine.

You can always do what we have resorted to:

Kent,
I don't get it.

Will there be a possibility that you will be deployed?

In the Air Force, no. The other services have that possibility which isn't constructive for me at this time.

Who told you that you would not deploy? AF chaplains are doing 6 to 9 month tours. I am in the Army Guard and I am getting ready for my second TOD. The military ministry is great but the OPTEMPO can be fierce even in the reserve side of the house. Remember if they need you they will call you.

I've been told Cat. B doesn't deploy. Of course, having been in before I know that's all relative.

Get it in writing! Also, the Navy and Air Force are closing down their chaplain schools and everything is moving to the Army school at Ft.Jackson SC. The whole thing is joint ministry not just service branch ministry.
We need more chaplains who fully believe in the sovereignty and providence of God working with our Armed Forces.
